At least 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
